Analyzing Architecture

The first project which helped me to realize what architecture really means and how we will study, was Analysis of precedent project. It included a lot of effort, developing new skills and positive emotions. Building, which were analyzed by groups were completely different, they are located in different parts of world, they were built using different material, so it was very interesting to see the presentation of each group. But before presentation there was a lot of work and issues which we needed to solve during our project. So our group analyzed Australian architect’s Glenn Murcutt`s Marie Short House. We started our study with searching general information about the site, climate and environment. To understand the concept of Murcutt’s architecture we explored who influenced him. Next we turned to drawing plans and building models, it was completely new experience for me. Sections, elevations, at the beginning this terminus sounded really frightened for me, however, this project helped me to understand it and I think that in the future there will be no problem for me to do measured drawings. Building models was the most exciting experience for me, it was really amazing to realize the structure of building, its circulation, how the space is divided, which materials are used. We also built location model, because for Murcutt it was very important how the building connects with nature, he used his knowledge about the moving of the sun, therefore we made a light study showing how light is changing during seasons. I find very interesting that for our special study we made ventilation model, because the most important client’s requirement was to make house as cool in summer, as warm in winter. So Glenn found a lot of great solutions how to manage it.
Three weeks passed very quickly, so it was time to present our project, honestly I was nervous, because I needed to explain different technical details of the house to tutors and student and I wanted them to understand me. Fortunately, our presentation was great, tutors were impressed of our work and just tell us some thing what we should do in our next projects, so I am really proud of my group.
It is really spectacular, that at the beginning I did not like the Marie Short House, it seemed to me too simple, looking like a farmhouse building, but during our project I realized that this house is really brilliant, and it takes all the advantages of the environment. So this project also helped me to look at the buildings more detailed and this is really success!
